According to the U.S. Dept of Transportation:

Walking and Bicycling

Walking and bicycling are not the only healthy and environmentally friendly travel modes. They also complement public transportation and driving.

Also, walking and bicycling help to complete a safe, efficient, and reliable transportation network. Due to these attributes, this seemingly modest and very local activity, supports national goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Biking and walking improve health through prevention and increase access to opportunity. They both provide critical first and last mile connections to transit. Secondly, they are often relied upon as the primary mode of travel. This includes many of those without access to cars, including youths and low income individuals.

Recognizing that an increase in walking and biking will mean increased exposure to vehicles and other risks. The U.S. Department of Transportation is focused on ensuring safe accommodations for pedestrians and bicyclists through a series of focused efforts. Further enhance safety in areas of a city or town that is used frequently by bicyclists and walkers.
